Diatomaceous earthDiatomaceous earth, or diatomite, is a white powder consisting of the fossilized remains of hard-shelled, sharp-edged diatom algae. Its tiny but very sharp edges fatally wound soft-bodied insects. Additionally, it absorbs oils from insects' waxy outer exoskeleton, causing dehydration. Typically applied as a dust, it may also be mixed with water and sprayed on, though this reduces its absorptive effect. It is most effective in a dry environment - while it may be used against slugs and snails, it isn't as effective. Please note that inhalation of highly-crystalline diatomaceous earth can cause silicosis - always use a dust mask when using this stuff. Also, be aware that diatomaceous earth is just as toxic to helpful predators and other beneficial insects.
